Duties

Essential Functions
  • Daily receives, processes, and stores evidence, maintains evidence in a secure manner, and is responsible for the overall security of the evidence room and its contents.
  • Tracks evidence checked out by investigators or case officers for court or processing.
  • May testify to chain of custody as an evidence technician in court proceedings.
  • Reviews evidence vouchers and ensures they are completed correctly and accurately.
  • Prepares and disseminates disposition sheets for evidence disposal and tracking purposes.
  • Coordinates evidence viewings for District Attorney, defense attorneys, and investigators.
  • Disposes of evidence and found or recovered property in accordance with state and federal laws by destroying or returning items to the owner or submitting them for auction.
  • Coordinates with agencies and individuals to reference disposal of property and evidence that no longer needs to be maintained. Evidence disposals include but are not limited to pill drop boxes, unclaimed property, evidence marked for destruction, evidence disposal, and drug disposal.
  • Interprets and applies state laws and regulations regarding the use and disposition of evidence and prepares letters for return property to owners. Checks proof of identification and/or property ownership and release as appropriate.
  • Perform background checks for weapons release.
  • Files cases upon completion
  • Maintains all storage locations for property and evidence. Inventories and completes dispositions for quarterly auctions (auction.com)
  • Enters and completes ATF Traces on all guns submitted. Conducts ATF traces for officers and investigators on all firearms submitted.
  • Enters all Sexual Assault Kit into the Sexual Assault Tracking system
  • Completes NCDOR Tax Warrant for drug money.
  • Fingerprints community members for taxi permits, ABC License, and housing applications.
  • Completes and maintains officer evidence voucher files, inventory of evidence room, and court orders for disposition
  • Files and electronically fills out SBI 5 forms for items to be submitted to the state crime lab.
  • Transports evidence to the NC Crime Lab, drugs for DEA Drug Burns, and money to Orange County Clerk’s office
  • Orders and maintain all evidence and packaging supplies for the unit and officers.
  • Enters arrestee fingerprint cards manually into the AFIS system daily.
  • Maintains the Prescription Drug Drop Box daily and removes medicine to be weighed and packaged in a box for future DEA drug burns.
  • Various other office duties to assist the Investigations Unit and Evidence Unit.

Requirements

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Criminal Justice, or related field and two years of experience using complex software tools in a criminal justice environment; One (1) year of experience working with a police agency or in the law enforcement profession, preferably in the preservation and custody of evidence, property recordkeeping, and inventory maintenance or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid Driver's License and safe driving record.
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must be able to be certified in several law enforcement information systems

  • Computers and associated hardware, computer software, and operating systems.

  • Modern office equipment.
  • Policies, procedures, and practices relating to collecting, documenting, storing, and disposing of evidence.
